Have you had enough of feeling anxious?
We can all feel anxious from time to time. Indeed, in certain situations some anxiety in life can be beneficial as for instance it can drive us to achieve our best, increase our awareness or protect us in certain dangerous situations.
Some people may feel nervous about an upcoming event such as an exam, driving test, interview, presentation etc, while others can live with anxiety as a constant in their life. We can become anxious about the past, present and future.
Anxiety can lead to feelings such as fear, irritability, low self-esteem, or a lack of confidence and can manifest itself into other symptoms such as skin disorders, nail biting, sweating, IBS, fatigue, insomnia, and in many cases it can lead to OCD.
The cause of anxiety
Anxiety is caused by negative thinking. It stems from the part of our brain which alerts us when there is potential danger which needs our attention – we know this to be our ‘fight or flight’ response area of the brain. To protect ourselves this response causes us to become fuelled with adrenaline and stress hormones.
However, although we need this part of our brain for our survival, it sometimes gets it wrong and becomes distorted and irrational and creates the same ‘fight or flight’ life-threatening response for non-dangerous everyday events.
It is not necessarily the events in our lives that cause anxiety, but it is the way we think about them which can trigger stress and anxiety.
Sometimes we can feel we are no longer ourselves, our personality can change and our ability to enjoy life is restricted.
The power of the mind
I will give you an understanding of how our brains work and why we react in the way we do; this can give you the first step towards change and help break the vicious cycle of negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours, and can be used to free yourself from anxieties and limiting beliefs.
When we can step out of a certain negative situation and understand why and how our thoughts and feelings influence us, then that awareness can be the first step into making positive choices and change.
